Okay so we are a bit overdue in getting rid of the binka(pacifier) We did go to just bedtime(one in each hand and one in the mouth and alternating them)when Hayden turned 2.....but quite honestly I was probably delaying the inevitable just as much as Hayden. I have been dreading this milestone for probably 2 years. I knew it would be sad, I knew it would be hard and quite honestly I sorta of just felt bad for my girl. Her binka's(all 17 of them) have provided her so much comfort and soothing since she was born. She has had one from the beginning, she has LOVED it from the beginning. I also know that if anyone tried to take my 6:00 glass of wine away(that provides comfort and soothing) I would smack them and I would smack them hard. LOL Anyway I also know that feeling of losing something that means so much. I had a Winnie the Pooh aka Pooh that I slept with until goodness I was probably 7 or older. I still remember when it was time to say goodbye(plus he was just plain disgusting by that point anyway)Change is hard and growing up is hard and getting NO sleep is hard. So totally being honest when I say that this was much more about me than Hayden.
We have been talking for months about the fact that it would soon be time to send them to the babies in Taiwan. Some days Hayden would say "I am ready to send my pink ones to the babies mommy" other days it went more like this "NOOOOOOO they are mine and I don't ever want to send them to the babies" or occasionally it would be "we can send them to the babies, but I am just going to keep one of them....okay?" The week before our trip to NYC Hayden declared she was READY to send them and for the binka fairy to deliver them to Mrs. Chen(her foster mother) and the babies and bring her back a surprise. Well......there was no way we could travel on this trip and stay with friends and be in the throes of trying to sleep without a binka to turn too. So I convinced her that we needed to wait until our return(oh thank goodness, because we really needed it on the plane as well as at our friend's house)
Upon our return we waited until the weekend to begin....so we were not exhausted for school and work. So Friday we began.....yes Hayden was sad and yes it was 11:45 p.m. before she fell asleep, but she did fall asleep. Yes I almost gave in and gave it to her. Her sweet little crying voice saying "I want my pink one, I don't want to give them to the babies, their mommies and daddies need to send them their own" "I don't want to be a big girl" "I don't want a surprise from the binka fairy" "I don't care if you are proud of me" "I just want MYYYYYY BINKA's back" it was absolutely heartbreaking, and I wanted to cry just as hard. But then she fell asleep and slept until 6:00 when she woke us up by yelling and crying from her bed "BINKA, BINKA" David went and laid down with her and got her back to sleep. That afternoon she accidently fell asleep without it too, and then Saturday night it was another late one 11:50 p.m. but much less crying and whining. So on Sunday we made a huge deal about how well she had done and that she could pick the balloons to attach the binka's and we would put a note on there too so the fairy would know where to deliver them. We attached just 2 binka's...one to each balloon and went outside to release them and I will be damned if the binka's were too heavy and just sank to the ground....ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING me?? Now Hayden is crying and we are trying to get one off and into David's pocket without her knowing so that it can take off(note to self...you really should have gotten like a dozen balloons) It finally lifted off, but at a pace that was almost unbearable. Hayden was distraught!!! We waved and blew kisses all the while she is crying and saying "I miss my binka's" "I am so sad mommy" It was REALLY awful, but yet all we could do was giggle under our breath. As they finally made it over our roof line, david whispers to me "watch we will find them in our backyard tomorrow morning" LOL Sunday night bedtime was amazing!! 9:10 and she was out cold and hardly even made a peep about the binka's. So I figured well that really was not that bad, we should have done this sooner(hahaha) We woke Monday morning to a note and gift from the fairy. Binka's were in Taiwan and the babies were so surprised and excited and Mrs. Chen was so proud of Hayden. There was also a digital camera. Well let me just say Miss fancy pants was THRILLED that the fairy would know EXACTLY what she wanted. She has taken no less than 400 pictures since yesterday morning. Now it is bedtime Monday night(school night) and the beloved camera has been tucked away and off to bed we go at 7:30. After me laying with her for an hour, daddy laying with her for 30 min and a whole lotta crying in between I think at 10:30 we finally heard silence. I guess we will see what tonight holds for us.
Today will also be our first day at school where a nap is suppose to take place without a binka. Her teacher knew that it is gone and made a huge deal when we arrived this morning, and was thrilled to hear all about her camera. But I am guessing it will be a NO GO on the nap unless exhaustion takes over.
As with anything change is so hard and there is part of me that just wants her to stay little and for her to not grow up. In this case I know it was time and certainly her teeth know it is time. But I just hate that she was so sad. We have tried so hard to make such a big deal about the fact that she should try and feel good that she gave someone else something that would make them so happy.....but at this age and with something that is SO important to you I think it is impossible to feel very pleased. I have told her over and over again that I know it is hard and I am so proud of her. I know if a few weeks it will just be a faded memory. But I will never forget how much she loved them, her binka mouth each morning, the noises she made while she slept and sucked on them. How she would count them all in her bed to make sure they were all there, how she rotated them from each hand into her mouth. I will even miss her rubbing them on her(or my) arm or her sheets(don't ask me why she liked doing this, she said it was the sound it made that she liked) How I would find her in the middle of the day in her bed and she would just tell me she needed some quality time with her blanket and binka, or how she changed their names....binka, pink ones, binky, paci, white one, car binka.
As with everything this too shall pass:)
see it started a LONG time ago....true love affair
loved her new ones that we brought for her
always in her mouth
binka's, balloons, and notes ready for lift off(sorta)
See she is in good spirits(short lived)
off they go to Taiwan(at a snails pace)
gift for Hayden that the fairy left by the front door
My very own camera mommy....do you think it has a flash??
